Technology Executive by Day, Cake Designer by Night: Young Victoria Designer “Moonlights” as Custom Cake Artist with Launch of PassionForCakes.com

Proving that BC business executives can live interesting double lives, Corina Ludwig launches
the first-of-its-kind custom cake company in Victoria.

Tuesday January 27, 2009 – Victoria BC >> Corina Ludwig, the VP of Operations at Victoria-based software company FunctionFox Systems, launched the custom cake company Passion For Cakes this week.

“For the past ten years I’ve lived the life of technology executive by day and cake creator by night. Hundreds of cakes later—and a lot of encouragement from friends and clients—and it was time to make it official.”

This week’s launch of Passion For Cakes fulfills a personal passion and a market need. Ludwig has been baking since the age of five. The switch from dabbling to dedicated took place over time. In recent years, word of mouth about her professionally-created cakes has grown dramatically. Orders have risen over 500% in the past two years.

Ludwig’s specialty is creating one-of-a-kind, custom-designed cakes such as birthday cakes, corporate cakes, special occasion cakes, and wedding cakes.

“The range and quality of Corina’s cakes are incredible” says Susan Simosko, of Susan Simosko Associates, Inc.  Simosko has ordered four cakes from Passion For Cakes including a cake of the New York City skyline.  “Each was better than the next. My personal favorite is the chocolate-ladened New York City cake, my hometown!  This was such a hit with guests that we sent photos to my daughter in New York who passed them on to friends and family. Folks were just astounded!” said Simosko.

Passion For Cakes corporate cake clients have included MAC Cosmetics, Planet Organic, St. Michael’s University School, and Envision Financial. “Corina’s attention to detail and creativity is absolutely unparalleled,” said Andrea Ting-Letts, previously of MAC Cosmetics.

Ludwig creates custom cakes for one to 200 people.  Each cake is custom made and can be tailored to accommodate nut-free, dairy-free, vegan and wheat-free requirements.

Cake flavors range from carrot to chocolate passion, from lemon coconut to spice and strawberry shortcake. Filling choices range from buttercream (chocolate, coconut, lemon, lime, orange, or mocha), to candy crunch, chocolate bar crunch, ganache (white or milk chocolate), ice cream, to fresh fruit and beyond.

Ludwig’s cake training includes mastering the advanced art of intricate cake architecture, her FoodSafe certificate, and training in advanced cake decoration.

Her corporate background includes a career in the design, advertising and technology fields. After earning a BA in Graphic Design at the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design in Vancouver, she lived in Vancouver, Lake Louise, Calgary, Toronto, and New York while working with well-known international companies such as design firm Ogilvy & Mather and Adobe Systems. Today she lives in Victoria BC with her husband. She is VP of Operations at FunctionFox Systems in Saanich, the leading time-tracking software company.

How it works:
Cakes are custom-designed, one-of-a-kind and typically aren’t duplicated. Each one is new and unique. Most cakes are ordered via email or over the phone. Orders are taken up to one year in advance.

Pricing:
Cost depends on cake flavors, fillings, size and complexity of design. Most cakes start at $200. This includes a quote with the description of the cake design, delivery and setup within the Greater Victoria area, rental of cake platter and serving utensils.  For smaller groups, inquire about look-alike tiers for larger but less expensive cakes, mini cakes, cupcakes, a sweet treat buffet or custom made truffle towers.
